Enameled round copper winding wire
Date: Jan 27, 2021
What is Enameled Round Copper Winding Wire?
Often called magnet wire or winding wire, it is a fundamental electrical conductor used in the construction of coils for electromagnetic devices.

Its basic structure is simple:

Conductor: A round, solid core of high-purity copper, chosen for its excellent electrical conductivity.

Insulation: A thin, continuous, and uniform layer of polymer resin (the "enamel") applied to the copper core. This layer is electrically insulating but very thin to allow for compact winding.

The primary purpose is to create a dense coil of wire where the turns are electrically isolated from each other, preventing short circuits, while allowing the magnetic field to be concentrated and effective.

Common Types of Enamel Insulation
The type of enamel defines the wire's performance, especially its thermal class and chemical resistance. Here are the most common types:
Enamel Type Thermal Class Key Characteristics Common Applications
Polyurethane (UEW) Class 105°C - 130°C Excellent solderability; the insulation self-strips in a molten solder bath. Good flexibility. Low-temperature applications, small transformers, relays, hobbyist projects.
Polyester (PEIW) Class 155°C Good thermal stability, chemical resistance, and flexibility. A very common, general-purpose wire. General-purpose motors, transformers, and inductors.
Polyester-imide (EIW) Class 180°C Excellent thermal endurance and overload capacity. The workhorse for most modern motors. Industrial motors, hermetic compressor motors, automotive applications.
Polyamide-imide (AIW) Class 200°C - 220°C Superior thermal and chemical resistance, excellent mechanical toughness (abrasion resistance). Often used as a top coat. High-performance motors (e.g., EV traction), harsh environments, aerospace.
Dual Coat / Solderable Varies (e.g., 155°C, 180°C) A base coat of polyester-imide for thermal stability with a top coat of polyurethane for easy solderability. Combines high-temperature performance with self-fluxing soldering. Applications where lead wires need to be soldered after winding, like small inductors.
